On February 6-8, ABA held a street law Training of Trainers session for 21 clinical students in Tsakhkadzor. There were 6 students from Gavar State University’s law clinic, 5 students from Civil Society Development Center of Syunik Law clinic, 5 from Gyumri Progress University’s clinic, 3 from Yerevan State University Law clinic and 2 from Open University’s clinic. The legal trainers were advocate Hayk Alumyan and YSU law professor Ruben Melikyan and the street law training methodologist was Narine Sargsyan, President of The Future Is Yours NGO.
During the three-day training the students received thorough knowledge on four human rights topics: Right to Liberty and Security, Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Assembly, Right to Fair Trial. They also learned how to teach these topics to teenage schoolchildren. The students highly appreciated the training, as, according to them, it not only enhanced their knowledge in human rights, but also promoted networking among clinical students. The clinical professors found the training project very useful also for raising human rights awareness among the young generation of rural areas, where the street law classes will be taught.
After the training, students were instructed to prepare their individual classes on the above-mentioned 4 human rights topics in the period of February 10 to March 10. Within this same period, the students contacted managements of secondary schools – mostly those in remote villages – in order to reach agreements with them to hold street law classes with their teenage students. Most arrangements were reached by the end of February. The planned 84 street law classes (21 students – each teaching 4 classes) will take place in the period of March 1 – April 15, 2009.
Below are the schedules of Street Law Classes to be held by the trained clinical students in their respective schools.
